Pterygium

Dr Marvelli, as an ophthalmologist, can treat or remove pterygium. This condition often causes eye irritation.

A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of the clear, thin tissue that lays over the white part of the eye. People at risk generally are:

  • Exposed to sunny, dusty, sandy, or windblown areas
  • Farmers, fishermen, and people living near the equator
  • Pterygium is rare in children.

Treatment

If a pterygium is small but becomes inflamed, Dr. Marvelli may prescribe lubricants or possibly a mild steroid eye drop to reduce swelling and redness, and the associated eye irritation. In some cases, surgical removal by an ophthalmologist is necessary. If you have eye irritation, Dr. Marvelli can exam you at any of his three locations, Ft Worth, Mansfield, or Colleyville, Texas to determine if you have this condition and what the appropriate treatment is.
