Pterygium

A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of the clear, thin tissue that lays over the white part of the eye. People at risk generally are:

• Exposed to sunny, dusty, sandy, or windblown areas

• Pterygium is rare in children.

Treatment

If a pterygium is small but becomes inflamed, Dr. Marvelli may prescribe lubricants or possibly a mild steroid eye drop to reduce swelling and redness, and the associated eye irritation. In some cases, surgical removal by an ophthalmologist is necessary. Who is a good candidate for the surgery?

Anyone with significant growth of the scar tissue which causes the eye irritation.

What is experienced during procedure itself?

Painless surgery under local anesthesia.

After procedure care and expectations?

Application of anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drops. The patient leaves with an eye patch which comes off within hours. Most people need a few days to a few weeks to reach optimal vision recovery and will still have eye irritation through the healing time but this symptom will disappear.
